Bars measure the wrong thing
Signal bars mostly reflect how close you are to a tower and how good your download looks. Streaming runs the other direction. It needs upload, which on cellular is the weaker, more crowded lane. You can stand under a tower with four bars and still have almost no upload room, especially in a crowd.
What actually drags your connection down
- Congestion. A packed arena, a festival, a busy street. Everyone is sharing the same towers, and upload is the first thing that suffers.
- Tower handoffs. As you walk, your phone hops from tower to tower. Each handoff is a moment where packets can stall or drop.
- Buildings and bodies. Concrete, glass, and even big crowds block and absorb signal. Walk indoors or into a tunnel and upload can collapse.
- One carrier, one weakness. A single SIM is at the mercy of one network's coverage and congestion right where you are standing.
None of these are things you can fix by holding the phone higher. They are properties of the network around you.
The fix: stop depending on any single connection
If one connection can fail, do not rely on one connection.
